Education And Expertise

Thomas Wood MSW, LCSW, MBA is a seasoned Licensed Clinical Social Worker with an MSW from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, and advanced training from the Family Therapy Training Institute of Milwaukee. He also holds a BA from the University of Notre Dame.

Thomas brings a unique blend of clinical skill, business insight, and lived experience to his work. As a psychotherapist, executive, parent, husband, and ex-husband, he understands the complexity of real-life challenges. With two decades of executive leadership and extensive clinical experience, he integrates relational and strategic thinking to offer clients a grounded, compassionate, and holistic approach to healing and personal growth.

Thomas employs a comprehensive approach informed by diverse therapeutic modalities to empower his clients to navigate life's complexities successfully. He is especially experienced at helping:

  • Individuals in the aftermath of infidelity. Thomas's knowledge of relationship dynamics enables healing from the anger, mistrust, guilt, and shame that frequently occur in the fallout of an affair.

  • Estranged individuals and families. With sensitivity and compassion, Thomas helps clients explore the reasons behind an estrangement, heal emotional wounds, and find a path towards reconciliation and personal growth.

  • Men adapting to changing norms and expectations. Thomas's up-to-date knowledge of men's issues and his lived experience as a man give him a deep understanding of the unique emotional and psychological challenges men face in an evolving society.​

Thomas uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and Systemic Family Therapy, along with Gestalt, Narrative, Object Relations, and Transpersonal therapies. He is adept at helping individuals work through and past the sequences, habits, patterns, and unfinished business that interfere with their happiness.​

The foundational framework for all of Thomas's work comes from Erik Erikson's Stages of Psychosocial Development, Carl Rogers' concept of Unconditional Positive Regard, and the non-dualistic approach to healing and forgiveness taught in A Course In Miracles.

Practice Philosophy

Thomas is guided by the words of the famous British author Evelyn Waugh who said, “To understand all is to forgive all.” Thomas seeks to be both understanding and forgiving, adopting the Dutch proverb to “live and let live.”

 

Thomas finds inspiration in literature, including Victor Hugo's Les Miserables, Percy Bysshe Shelley's Ozymandias, Kahlil Gibran's On Children, and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin's Patient Trust. His extensive reading underscores his appreciation for the profound insights into the human experience that foster personal growth and well-being.
