Overcoming Depression And Anxiety

FINDING HAPPINESS IN LIFE

Depression Makes The Brightest Day Seem Dark

Depression can arrive after a loss, a transition, or a long accumulation of stress. Sometimes it comes for no apparent reason at all, just out of the blue.

We tend to blame ourselves for depression, but that's unfair. Depression is an illness, like an infection or a broken limb. You wouldn't judge someone who slipped, fell, and broke their leg. The same goes for depression.

The good news is that depression responds to treatment. Therapy — particularly approaches that address both thought patterns and the underlying emotional material driving them — can make a big difference.

Anxious Without Knowing Why

Anxiety is the mind's alarm system stuck in the on position. It is exhausting to live with — the low-grade hum of worry that never fully quiets, the physical tension that accumulates in your shoulders and chest. Ordinary situations can suddenly feel charged with threat, even though you know in your head that they aren't.

Anxiety is also highly treatable. Understanding what triggers it, learning to interrupt the thought patterns that feed it, and building tolerance for uncertainty — these are learnable skills. You don't have to white-knuckle your way through it indefinitely. Therapy can help you turn the volume down.
